"Tucked away in President Barack Obama’s financial plan for the upcoming year is a tribute to former president George H.W. Bush. Obama proposed to designate $10 million toward a national volunteer fund that would reflect the 41st president’s lifetime of public service. The George H.W. Bush Volunteer Generation Fund would provide support to volunteer organizations and state service commissions to boost their impact. The fund would focus on volunteer management practices that would enhance volunteer recruitment and retention.
As president, Bush signed the National and Community Service Act in 1990 which gave grants to schools to support service-learning. It also authorized demonstration grants to national service programs. The act led to the creation of the Corporation of National and Community Service, an network that engages nearly 5 million Americans and provides support for service organizations around the country."
